Saving money = simple? I know, I know. Saving money always sounds good, but with things like unexpected bills and expenses, and holidays it can be well… a stressful challenge! That is why I am so excited to have partnered up with 9 other savvy bloggers to bring you saving tips for the new year! Plus… there’s a chance to recover from the holidays with our $250 Amazon.com gift card giveaway!
Makeovers & Motherhood’s simple savings idea…
SHOP OFF SEASON!!! Think about ALL the things you buy and all the things you use throughout the year that you could save money on by planning ahead…
Holiday items. Right now, stores are having 80-90% sales on Christmas items! I have already purchased ornaments for next year’s Christmas crafts. A box of ornaments that would cost me $9.99 regular, were only $1.99 at the 80% off after-Christmas price! Need a new Christmas tree, stockings, or storage boxes? Buy them now! As long as you know you’ll use the items next holiday season, why not spend a few dollars now rather than pay full price (or a small discount) later? I will be doing the same thing after Valentine’s Day… stocking up on craft supplies and things like cupcake wrappers to use next year!
Home decorations. I LOVE to decorate. I am not one that changes all my home’s decor every holiday season, but I do like some embellishments here and there. Not only am I checking out home decor during these great after-holiday sales, but I keep my eyes open all year for ways to repurpose sale items. Think outside the box when shopping for home decorations. If I find something at a phenomenally discounted price, but am not in love with the color of the item or all it’s features, I do a quick lookover of the item and think how I could refinish it to suit the look I’m going for. The things I consider: Can I paint it? Can I remove any unwanted adornments on it? How much would the project cost me to redo it?
Clothes. I’m talking about those wonderful rows of clearance racks at your favorite department store! We are big at buying clothing off season… swimsuits for less than $5! Toddler t-shirts for $1.60! Yes, please! If you are looking for the hottest style of this season, this may not be for you. However, the never-goes-out-of-style classic pieces that you can mix and layer like tanks and fitted tees, plus zip-up sweatshirts and sweaters can often be found on clearance for a fraction of the cost.
We are especially big on buying our boys’ clothes off season. You can find many clearance racks at garage sale and consignment shop prices (especially if you can add a store coupon on top of the clearance price)… and the items are new! My hopes are to have the clothes be worn and handed down to all 3 of our boys. Because we are budget cautious, I do occasionally garage sale and consignment shop for kid clothes, but I am extremely particular of clothing that looks worn, faded and whose wear life has already been shortened. So whenever I’m in a department store and have a few minutes to check out the clearance racks, you’ll find me gathering up the super savings in the next size up for my boys.
Outdoor items. I’m thinking things like lawnmowers, patio furniture, grills, snow shovels, snowblowers. If your hose is leaking, buy a new one on sale at the end of summer rather than waiting until next spring and paying full price.
Home improvement services. Did you know that many service companies offer discounts during their off-season? For instance, we had two tree trimming companies suggest to us that we wait until winter to have a tree that we were indecisive on cut down. Wow! Even services like carpet cleaners have a slow season (hint: it’s the winter season). So check now for discounts on services you may need to have done around your home and plan ahead.
The key here is to plan ahead. Yes, you may not have budgeted next year’s Christmas purchases in January. However, purchasing off-season will help you save money and make for a better budget in the long run!
