Makeovers & Motherhood is turning ONE! Yes, it’s our first blogging birthday!
It’s been an entire year of writing, creating, not sleeping, doing projects, learning social media, and exploring the world of blogging. Some days, with bloodshot eyes, a frappuccino in hand, and irritable written all over my face I wonder what on earth I’m doing. But truthfully, I love it. And I love you all!
So why do I do this?
- I love writing (hence my English degree). I’m full of things to say, and well, I just have to get it out somewhere!
- I watched my sister-in-law create a wonderful and successful blogging resource for hands-on kid activities just by playing with her son. She was spending time with her family, doing what she loved, and earning a fabulous income. And I wanted what she had.
- Seth Godin, author, entrepreneur, marketer, and public speaker whose message is about making something happen, was a speaker at a leadership conference my hubby & I attended. It was there that the idea of blogging really set in as he spoke these memorable words… “You can’t lead well if you aren’t doing what you love to do. What do you want to do? If you want to write, start a blog.”
It took awhile, but I finally jumped in and did it. By jumped in, I really mean I procrastinated until the night before I was to attend a large (and costly) blogging conference that I decided I should probably have a blog to share when I get there. So my hubby pushed publish on our creation and we emerged into the blogging world.
Now, one year later… here we are celebrating with all you wonderful new friends! And I couldn’t be more thrilled that you’re here!
Here’s a few things I’ve learned over the past 12–months of blogging:
Blogging takes a LOT of work! Sure, it’s a lot of fun too. But geesh, it’s a lot of work! Between doing the activity, project, or creating the recipe, then taking pictures, and writing about it… there is lots of time involved.
I’ve mastered the skill of sleep writing!
Having the volume turned on for FaceBook notifications is not a good idea when you have hundreds of blogging girlfriends who are great teachers and are all online at the same time!
Social media can be evil! How many times do we moms see everything else our girlfriends (or other bloggers) are doing and feel less than adequate with what we are doing? I have had to put my blinders on and do the activities and projects that my boys enjoy and that works for our home and family. And I have to know IT IS ENOUGH and IT IS OKAY! I don’t constantly do projects and crafts. I don’t always have a clean home. But I do what I can to take care of my family the best way I can no matter what someone else is doing and sharing!
Social media can be a super time sucker! Even though it is my “job” to be online, even I get sucked into the “just let me check one more thing” which means I’ll be on the computer for another 30 minutes. I’ve had to learn to put the computer, iPhone, and iPad away or ignore the notifications so that I can be in the moment with my boys and hubby.
My hubby and I have found “nerd talk” (blog coding and computer/electronic conversations) a new bonding activity. Kudos to my wonderful guy for being so supportive and being the “man behind the scenes” that makes my blog work!
Blogging has helped my boys and I bond! Blogging about kid crafts and activities means I actually have to do them with my boys. I’ve learned that paint cleans up, dirt is washable, and that we have a whole lot more fun when I look at these activities that I previously just found messy as now being fun. And they are… for both the boys and me.
I’ve also learned that you LOVE printables! Scissor cutting practice sheets and activity packs have been your favorites! (BTW… keep watching! I have several new cutting sheets coming soon!) In fact, below I’m resharing our Top 12 posts during our first 12 months!
Our top 12 in our first 12…
